I wasn’t aware of who Todd was until I found his blog, but man had I seen his work! He’s been working in comics for decades, with logo designs and lettering in many DC and Marvel books. You can find out more about his career on his site.

Logo Studies

Now, to the main reason for writing… By far, my favorite posts on his blog are his Logo Studies. They are absolutely great reads! He critiques comic book logos he’s designed, as well as logos created by others. His analysis of what works and what doesn’t is amazing, and essential reading for anyone interesting in logo design, comic book fan or not.

Growing up with my dad was awesome. Every toy I excitedly ripped open on my birthday, Christmas, or random trips to Toys R Us, was met by just as much enthusiasm from my dad. You see, he’s a sculptor, a collector, and always a kid-at-heart. Toys feed those interests perfectly. To this day, he has bookshelves and tables covered with some of the most exciting action figure still-lifes you’ll ever see… Lone Ranger riding into battle with Zorro and Gandalf… Hellboy hanging out with Indiana Jones… Storm Shadow clashing with the Ninja Turtles. Some of these toys having “disappeared” from my toy chest over the years. And that was all part of the fun. My dad and I shared our toys. I’d play with them for a while, he add some of them to one of his shelves, I’d take them off the shelf and play with them some more.

As I got older, and played with my toys less, I started creating shelves of action figures too… Spawn battling Darth Vader… Batman hanging out with Ash, from Evil Dead… the GhostBuster building becoming the new base for the X-Men. I had become just like my dad, and it was great.

Special Figures

Of course, my dad and I each had some special figures that we had left in their packaging. These figures we didn’t share, sort of an unspoken “off limits” rule. Sometimes we’d even buy two of one figure so that we could open one, and keep the other in it’s packaging. For me, it was primarily Star Wars “Power of the Force” and some Spawn figures. My dad however, was more choosy with the figures he decided to leave in their packaging, or he was just too excited to rip them open and add them to one of his shelves. In any case, he didn’t have many figures in their original packaging, but the ones he did have, were great ones. The coolest of these, at least to me, were the Superman, Batman and Flash “Super Powers” figures. This Christmas my father passed these “Super Powers” action figures onto me, to include in my collection, and I couldn’t be happier. They have a few dings here and there, but I don’t mind. These figures will always be the coolest part of my collection.

Bonding with my father

Many fathers and sons bond over various activities, fishing, hunting, sports, etc. My father and I, amongst other things, bond over collecting action figures. We talk about new figures coming out. How cool the sculpts look. The detailed accessories. Where we’ll put them on our shelves. We act like excited kids together, and it’s great!

I’ll always love collecting, discussing, and playing with action figures and it’s all thanks to the coolest dad, and best childhood a kid could ask for.
